Top tips for maintaining a healthy diet

Eating healthily can cut the risk of an array of health conditions. It can also improve your mental health, which is an essential for many people in these troubling times.

If you need to get back on track with healthy eating, here are some top tips to instantly boost your health and kick-start a better diet:

1. Eat more fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables are a major source of a lot of vitamins and minerals, and, of course, fiber, which is essential for a healthy digestive system.

You should try and aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. These can be fresh, but they could also be frozen, dried, canned, or in a juice or smoothie

2. Don’t skip meals

Although it can be tempting, don’t try and get a quick fix or lose weight by skipping meals. Being inconsistent with food can lead to drops in blood sugar, which can affect your mood.

In particular, you should always have a healthy breakfast – it’s the most important meal of the day! Opt for something that will release energy slowly and will keep you going for longer.

3. Plan your meals in advance

Meal planning can be a great way of making sure you eat healthily throughout the week, especially if you have a busy schedule.

Plan out some healthy and balanced meals at the start of every week. Then, write a shopping list and stick to it!

If you’re looking for recipe inspiration, there are plenty of places you can turn to. For instance, you can try recipe books, online recipe websites or videos.

4. Drink plenty of water

It’s very important to stay hydrated! The average person should aim for at least 1.5 litres of water throughout the day. This can greatly improve your overall health and reduce your appetite.

If you want, you can also drink other healthy beverages like fruit juice, milk, or smoothies. Try and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol.

5. Eat food that you like!

Healthy doesn’t have to mean boring! And, you don’t need to force yourself to eat things just because they’re healthy. Try becoming more creative in the kitchen and by trying as many new foods as you can.

Add more new flavors to your meals. Pick out some fruits and vegetables that you’ve never tried before. Search for new recipes online, or exchange ideas with your friends. Food should be exciting and bring a sense of joy to your life!
