A new TikTok video that recently went viral has been blamed for shortages of a prescription diabetes drug, Ozempic. In the video, the creator claimed that the drug can make it easier to lose weight, leading to higher demand than usual.
Ozempic is produced by the pharmaceutical company, Novo Nordisk. The drug is available as an injection pen and is only available with a prescription. It has proven to be highly effective for treating patients with type 2 diabetes but regulating their blood sugar and insulin levels and comes in 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg doses.
However, the drug has another off-label use as a weight loss aid. Ozempic contains an ingredient called semaglutide, which reduces the person’s appetite by mimicking glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in the body.
After the TikTok video with this information was released, it rapidly went viral and users applauded the drug as a “miracle” weight loss treatment, even though it hasn’t been officially approved for this purpose.
So far, there have been over 360 million views on the hashtag #Ozempic, and health officials around the world have expressed concerns about shortages of the medication.
In a statement, Novo Nordisk said it has already invested more than $1.6 billion to expand production, and health officials have called for a limit on prescriptions.
In its statement, Novo Nordisk said: “We are committed to working closely with authorities in affected markets to minimize the impact on patients and we are doing everything we can to be able to meet demand as fast as possible.”
There have also been warnings about some of the side effects of the drug, which haven’t been mentioned in the videos. Some of the common side effects of Ozempic include nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, and vomiting. In some cases, it can even cause more severe side effects like kidney or gallbladder problems.
