How to protect your tyres from the cold weather in winter

Winter brings a picturesque landscape of snow-covered streets and cosy nights by the fireplace, but it also brings challenges for your vehicle, especially your tyres.

Cold temperatures can impact tyre performance, which is why it’s so important to find ways to protect them during the winter months. Some examples of how you can do this are:

1. Check tyre pressure Regularly

As temperatures drop, tyre pressure tends to decrease, and underinflated tyres can reduce fuel efficiency and compromise traction and handling. Regularly check your tyre pressure, especially before long journeys, and maintain it at the levels recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.

2. Invest in winter tyres

Winter tyres are designed to perform in cold weather conditions. They have a different rubber compound that remains flexible in low temperatures, providing better traction on icy and snowy roads. Consider investing in a set of winter tyres for the winter season, and remember to switch back to all-season or summer tyres when the weather warms up.

3. Rotate your tyres

Regular tyre rotation is essential for even tread wear. Uneven wear can lead to reduced traction and stability on winter roads. Consult your vehicle’s manual for recommended tyre rotation intervals, and ensure that it is part of your routine maintenance schedule.

4. Keep tyres aligned

If your wheels are misaligned, tyres can wear unevenly, affecting your vehicle’s handling and fuel efficiency. Have a professional mechanic check and adjust your wheel alignment if necessary, especially before the winter season.

5. Drive with caution

Driving in winter brings extra hazards, so make sure you adjust your driving habits.  Accelerate and decelerate slowly, avoid sudden movements, and give yourself more time and space to stop. This will help you protect your tyres and stay safe on the road.

6. Protect tyres from sunlight

While cold weather is the primary concern in winter, exposure to sunlight can still affect your tyres. UV rays can cause rubber to deteriorate over time. Whenever possible, park your vehicle in a shaded area or use tyre covers to protect them from direct sunlight.

7. Clean tyres regularly

Road salt and other de-icing agents are commonly used during winter, and they can accelerate corrosion on your tyres and rims. Regularly clean your tyres with mild soap and water to remove salt and grime, and consider applying a protective tyre dressing to prevent cracking.

8. Store tyres properly

If you have a set of tyres specifically for winter or summer use, proper storage is essential. Store tyres in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If possible, elevate them off the ground to prevent flat spots from developing over an extended period of storage.

Taking proactive steps to protect your tyres during the winter months is essential. By following these tips, you can ensure that your vehicle performs optimally in cold weather conditions, providing you with a safer and more comfortable driving experience all winter long.
