7 Dead, Several Injured in Ferry Dock Collapse on Sapelo Island, Georgia

A devastating incident unfolded on Saturday as at least seven people lost their lives, and several others were injured following the collapse of a ferry dock on Sapelo Island, Georgia. The incident occurred during a local celebration honoring the Gullah-Geechee community, descendants of enslaved Africans who have maintained their rich cultural heritage on the island. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the tragedy has sent shockwaves through the small, close-knit community.

Among the deceased was a chaplain for the Georgia DNR, as confirmed by spokesperson Melissa Cummings. The gravity of the situation escalated as six individuals sustained critical injuries, with two needing air ambulance transport to hospitals for immediate medical attention. The incident took place just before 4 p.m. when the gangway at the visitor ferry dock unexpectedly collapsed, causing at least 20 people to fall into the waters below.

Initially, there were rumors suggesting that a boat had collided with the dock, but DNR officials later clarified that no such collision occurred. The precise cause of the dock’s collapse remains under investigation, raising questions about the safety of infrastructure on the island. Captain Chris Hodge of the DNR noted that the gangway had been secured following the incident, and multiple emergency agencies were deployed for search and rescue operations. Boats equipped with side-scan sonar and helicopters were utilized to assist in the recovery efforts, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office played a crucial role in coordinating the emergency response. In a social media post, they announced that a family reunification center had been established at the Elm Grove Baptist Church for those seeking information about their loved ones. This outreach was vital in providing support to families during this tragic time.

Both President Joe Biden and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed their condolences and sorrow over the tragic event. President Biden stated, “Jill and I mourn those who lost their lives, and we pray for the injured and anyone still missing.” He also confirmed that the White House was in contact with state and local officials to provide necessary assistance to the affected community. Governor Kemp echoed these sentiments, urging all Georgians to join in prayer for those impacted by the tragedy.

The City of Darien, located near Sapelo Island, released a statement lamenting how the incident had turned what was supposed to be a day of celebration into a somber occasion. “Please keep those who lost their lives today, the families of those affected, and our community in your prayers,” the city’s post read. The Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society, which organizes the island’s annual Cultural Day Festival, expressed their heartbreak over the loss and gratitude for the community’s support during this trying time.

Sapelo Island, a remote barrier island off the Georgia coast, is accessible only by boat and is home to around 70 full-time residents. Many of these residents are descendants of enslaved individuals who worked on the island’s plantations. The island is characterized by its rich cultural heritage and history, and ferry services typically operate three times a day, connecting it to the mainland dock in Meridian.

As investigations into the cause of the dock’s collapse continue, the community is left grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event. What was intended to be a day of cultural celebration has turned into a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures in community events. The local and state officials are expected to address infrastructure safety and ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future, as the nation mourns those lost in this tragic accident.
