North Carolina Petting Zoo Rabies Alert After Goats Test Positive

 

A North Carolina mobile petting zoo has become the center of a public health investigation after several baby goats were found to have rabies.

The animals belonged to Farm Adventures, a mobile petting zoo based in Harmony. According to state health officials, the goats traveled to numerous events across North Carolina between July 28 and August 27, creating concerns that visitors may have come into close contact with infected animals.

Officials have been working with local health departments and event organizers to identify people who may have touched, held or otherwise had direct contact with the goats.

The potential exposure sites included private gatherings, community events, assisted-living facilities and other locations in several North Carolina counties. Because young goats are commonly handled and cuddled at petting events, health officials are taking the possible exposures seriously.

How the Goats May Have Contracted Rabies

Investigators believe the goats were likely exposed after a skunk entered the area where they were being kept in late July. Three goats were subsequently confirmed to have rabies, while another goat was presumed to have been infected.

The goats were reportedly too young to receive routine rabies vaccination. The animals were kept separately from other livestock, and officials determined that the other animals at the farm did not present a known rabies exposure risk to visitors.

The infected goats were euthanized as authorities worked to prevent additional exposure and determine who may have encountered them.

The investigation has already resulted in hundreds of people being evaluated. Recent reports indicate that more than 200 individuals were advised to receive post-exposure treatment following possible contact with the animals.

What Visitors Should Do After Possible Exposure

Rabies is a serious viral disease that can be fatal once symptoms develop. The virus can spread when saliva from an infected animal enters broken skin or comes into contact with areas such as the eyes, nose or mouth.

Anyone who believes they interacted directly with the affected goats during the possible exposure period should contact their local health department. Medical professionals can determine whether preventive treatment is necessary based on the type of contact involved.

Preventive treatment can stop rabies from developing when it is given before symptoms begin. People should therefore avoid waiting for signs of illness before seeking professional advice.

North Carolina has not reported a human rabies case since 2011, according to health officials. While human infections remain extremely rare, authorities continue to stress the importance of promptly evaluating possible exposures.

The incident is also a reminder for families visiting petting zoos and animal exhibits to follow safety instructions, avoid contact with wild animals and report any bites, scratches or concerning animal interactions to health professionals.
