Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is preparing to travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly as the United States and Iran remain involved in an ongoing conflict.
Pezeshkian is expected to lead a smaller Iranian delegation to the annual gathering of world leaders. The US government has approved visas for Iran’s core delegation, although officials traveling to New York will face restrictions on their movements and certain purchases.
Pezeshkian Expected in New York
Iranian state media reported that Pezeshkian will leave Tehran on Tuesday, September 22, to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
His schedule is expected to include an address to the General Assembly, meetings with foreign leaders and discussions with Iranian communities in the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to New York ahead of the president as part of the country’s diplomatic delegation.
Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Wednesday.
US Allows Iran’s Core Delegation to Attend
The decision to permit the Iranian delegation to enter New York comes despite the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran.
A State Department spokesperson said the US would allow Iran’s core delegation to attend the high-level UN meetings in accordance with its obligations as the host country. The delegation will nevertheless be subject to travel restrictions and limits on purchases under US sanctions policy.
The Iranian group is expected to be smaller than the delegation that attended last year’s General Assembly.
A Different UN Visit This Year
Iran has participated in UN General Assembly meetings for decades. This year’s visit is unusual because Pezeshkian is expected to address world leaders while the United States and Iran remain at war.
The situation is also unfolding as Washington considers its next steps regarding the conflict. US President Donald Trump has indicated that major decisions concerning Iran could be approaching, while Tehran has warned that a new US attack could lead to retaliation against American interests in the region.

Restrictions Will Shape the Visit
Iranian officials have faced movement restrictions during previous visits to New York. The current delegation will again have limits on where members can travel outside the UN area.

The US decision to allow Iran’s delegation to attend also contrasts with its refusal to issue a visa to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who is expected to address the assembly by video.
