Brazilian authorities have detained five individuals, including a retired general and a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, for allegedly conspiring to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other key officials in late 2022, just before Lula assumed office. The Federal Police revealed the details of the plot, which included plans to target Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
The Supreme Court, through an arrest order signed by Justice Moraes, confirmed the alleged conspirators had devised detailed plans, using advanced military techniques, to execute the attacks. Among the arrested is retired general Mário Fernandes, who previously held a prominent role in Bolsonaro’s administration.
The plot also reportedly involved military personnel with specialized training in advanced operations. Police investigations uncovered documents outlining potential methods to carry out the assassinations, including the use of poison and explosives. The conspirators allegedly aimed to exploit President Lula’s health vulnerabilities, planning to deploy chemicals during his frequent hospital visits.
Investigators found that the plan included establishing an “Institutional Crisis Management Office” to take control of Brazil’s government after the intended coup. This strategy demonstrated the meticulous planning behind the operation.
The arrests have sparked widespread debate in Brazil. Bolsonaro’s supporters, including his son Flavio Bolsonaro, have dismissed the accusations. Flavio argued on social media that merely planning such an act does not constitute a crime unless execution begins.
The investigation into the plot began earlier this year, and authorities have also scrutinized Bolsonaro’s involvement. Reports suggest that in December 2022, Bolsonaro allegedly met with military officials to discuss a legal framework to remain in power. Bolsonaro has consistently denied any attempt to orchestrate a coup.
The controversy stems from the divisive 2022 presidential election, where Lula narrowly defeated Bolsonaro. The election results were met with resistance by Bolsonaro’s supporters, culminating in the January 8, 2023, riots in Brasilia, where demonstrators stormed key government buildings.
