Amazon has announced details of its latest efforts to reduce the number of counterfeit goods on its website and has also reminded customers of the protection it offers against fake items.
According to the recently reached Brand Protection Report, the company has recently stepped up its efforts to crack down on sellers trying to sell counterfeit goods on Amazon.
In the report, Amazon says that it has invested more money in advanced machine learning techniques in recent years and, because of this, it managed to stop 800,000 attem[ts to sell counterfeit items last year. In 2020, it’s estimated that there were 6 million attempts in total.
In 2022, Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit sued or referred for investigation over 1,300 criminals in the U.S., UK, EU, and China, showing that it’s getting more serious about crime.
The tech giant says that it’s gotten much more proactive and is now using tools and controls to stop counterfeiters from being able to use its platform to trick shoppers. As well as enforcing these changes in its own supply chains and brand names, it’s also investing in more protection against third-party sellers.
Dharmesh Mehta, Amazon’s vice president of Worldwide Selling Partner Services said: “We take pride in the progress our organization has made this past year, specifically further evolving our technology to stay ahead of bad actors and doubling down on our criminal referral and litigation efforts.
We’re appreciative of the growing industry-wide collaboration in this space, and look forward to continuing to innovate and work together to drive counterfeits to zero.”
In the report, Amazon went on to detail its plans to extend its efforts to identify and seize millions of counterfeit goods that manage to find their way into its supply chains. It also reminds customers of the “A-Z Customer Guarantee”, which provides a full refund to any eligible customer who isn’t happy with the condition of their product.
The company says: “This protects customers whether they bought the item from Amazon or an independent selling partner.
Over the last few years, we went even further. Even if a customer doesn’t contact us, if we identify a customer purchased a counterfeit product, Amazon proactively contacts the customer, informs them they purchased a counterfeit product and fully refunds their purchase. No customer action is necessary.”
